Turning Instead of Grinding — A Retrofit Path
Hard turning replaces a grinding pass with a rigid precision lathe fitted with a hydrostatic spindle, finishing hardened parts in one setup. It removes the grinding operation and a second clamping.
What the Retrofit Changes
- Replace the rolling-bearing spindle with a hydrostatic spindle for better runout and damping
- Add a hydrostatic oil-supply system to keep the film stable
- Use PCBN/CBN tooling for hard turning
Measured Benefits
| Item | Result |
|---|---|
| Process consolidation | no grinder / second clamp |
| Efficiency gain | up to 30–50% |
| Utilization gain | ~60% |
| Surface finish | Ra 0.4–0.8 μm |
| Payback | ~6–18 months |
