Drum Gear Coupling Angular Misalignment: Allowable Limits and How to Protect Coupling Life
In most drivelines the driving and driven shafts are never perfectly aligned. A drum gear coupling — also called a crowned tooth coupling — is built to close that gap. Its teeth are curved so the coupling can swing and slide, absorbing angular, radial and axial offset while keeping reaction forces off the bearings.
What allowable angular misalignment means
Every coupling model is rated for a maximum angular compensation. For the common drum gear (GICL-style) family this limit is typically ≤1.5°, depending on size and tooth geometry. Radial and axial limits are specified alongside it. Staying inside these figures keeps the load spread evenly across the tooth flank.
What happens when offset goes past the limit
Once angular offset exceeds the allowable value, the active tooth contact area shrinks and local pressure climbs. The lubrication film breaks down, tooth ends take the load and wear accelerates. Add poor lubrication, degraded oil or contamination through a failed seal and service life falls sharply. The usual failure chain is: misalignment too large → edge loading → overheating → tooth wear → coupling seizure.
Where drum gear couplings are used
They sit in heavy and high-precision drives: mining and material handling, oil and gas lines, rail transit powertrains, machine tools, and high-speed or high-precision OEM assemblies where torque density matters.
Typical specification
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Coupling type | Drum gear / crowned tooth |
| Allowable angular misalignment | ≤ 1.5° (by model) |
| Compensation | Angular / radial / axial |
| Tooth form | Crowned (drum) gear |
| Lubrication | Grease or oil, sealed |
| Selection basis | Torque, speed, bore, offset |
How to protect coupling life
Align within the rated limits at installation, use the specified lubricant, keep seals intact, and re-check offset after the first run-in. For a correct match to your shaft and duty, see our GICL drum gear coupling selection guide or review the gear machining equipment we build around it.
